Chemical reactors, coal-to-liquid plants, and refineries in Secunda and Sasolburg, South Africa, depend on accurate, real-time temperature data. If a reactor runs ten degrees too hot, a chemical batch can be ruined or trigger a runaway pressure event. However, sticking a delicate temperature probe—like a thermocouple or RTD—directly into a high-velocity, corrosive pipe stream is impossible. The fluid force will snap the sensor in seconds, and replacing it would require draining the entire pipeline.
This is why every critical temperature measurement point requires a heavy-duty Thermowell. A thermowell is a solid, closed-end metal tube that is permanently installed into the piping system, acting as an armored shield between the destructive process fluid and your fragile sensing element. The thermometer slides safely inside the dry bore of the thermowell, reading heat transfer through the metal wall while staying completely isolated from line pressure and acid attack.
Furthermore, if a sensor malfunctions or needs recalibration, a technician can unscrew the probe and slide a new one in while the main pipe stays under full operating pressure.
At Kemlite Piping Solution, we machine thermowells from solid bar stock rather than welding pipe sections together, ensuring there are no weak seams at the tip. Depending on your pressure class and fluid velocity, we manufacture three primary connection styles:
- Flanged Thermowells: Bolted directly onto an existing nozzle—often paired with our SS 310 or Duplex weld-neck flanges for high-heat and corrosive duties[cite: 4].
- Threaded & Socket Weld Thermowells: For smaller diameter process lines and lower pressure classes.
- Van Stone Thermowells: Utilizing a lap-joint design that reduces replacement costs by allowing you to reuse the backing flange.
For abrasive slurries and high-velocity steam lines, we supply tapered-shank and stepped-shank profiles that prevent vortex shedding and vibration fatigue. Whether your Secunda plant requires standard SS 316L, Alloy 20 for sulfuric acid, or Inconel 625 for extreme heat, we machine custom insertion lengths to match your exact pipe diagrams.
